TAKS Instructions for Third Grade

The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills -- the TAKS test -- is used to evaluate specific skills of students in grades 3 through 8. In the third grade, students are tested on math and reading. If a student fails to pass a section of the test, he receives accelerated instruction in that section. The instructions for taking the test are generally simple, requiring the student to read each question carefully, then supply the correct answer in the answer book.

Instructions

    • 1

Instruct students to read every question carefully. In the reading section, students may encounter short stories or paragraphs that they must read. For the math section, tell students that they can refer as needed to the mathematics conversion chart included in the test booklet.

    • 2

Tell students to mark their chosen answer for each question by completely filling in the bubble next to the answer. Instruct them to use a pencil. If they make a mistake, tell students to erase the incorrect answer as thoroughly as possible.

    • 3

Tell students to close their test booklets after answering and reviewing every question. You may have the students drop off their booklet with you, or wait with the closed booklet on top of their desk. Notify students that they must stop answering questions and close the booklet when the allotted testing time runs out.
