Practice Materials for the 8th Grade Science TAKS Test

The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test is a standardized test given to Texas students each year to measure progress in mathematics, reading and writing skills. In the tests taken in April 2011, 80 percent of 8th grade students met standards. When allowed to retest in May and June, the number of students meeting standards rose to 90 percent cumulatively. The relative success of the program might be linked to the ample opportunities provided by the state and third parties to practice the skills and background knowledge necessary to succeed on exam day. Many such resources are readily available online.
  1. Free Test Online

    • Free Test Online provides sample tests for most state standardized tests and most age groups, including TAKS tests for 8th graders. The site offers three separate tests, in algebra, geometry and data analysis, statistics and probability, respectively. Each quiz offers between six and 10 practice questions. After the student submits his answers, the site reveals how many he got right, correct answers to the ones he missed, and a comparison to the results of others taking the same test.

    IXL

    • IXL offers hundreds of questions in dozens of categories for Texas 8th graders, from very basic to very advanced. Each question includes several samples offered at random, so the test can be taken over and over. Each answer is graded and the site offers explanations for methodology in the case of wrong answers.

Texas Education Agency (TEA): TAKS Booklet

    • TEA offers online booklets that can be printed out to be used in class or at home. The 8th grade math booklet explains the TAKS test, terms used, categories and the like. It includes printable charts with definitions of terms, vocabulary and relevant formulas, such as the Pythegoran Theorem, and conversions, such as feet to miles. The booklet also includes sample questions to be discussed in class or used as a study guide. Booklets must be printed out at 100 percent to allow room for use of rulers by students. Although correct answers are indicated, the emphasis is on what students should consider to arrive at the answer, giving them examples of critical thinking and what to expect from the actual test.

Texas Education Agency: Online Practice Test

    • TEA offers a comprehensive practice test online. The test contains 50 multiple-choice questions and is representative of what students will see when they take the TAKS exam. The questions cover algebra, geometry and statistics and probability and students can receive an immediate grade. They can also take the test as often as they wish to work on weaknesses.
