How to Administer the TAKS Test

The TAKS, or Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test, is administered to students in grades three and above. The TAKS test measures a student's skills in various areas, depending on their grade level, such as reading, writing, math and science. As a teacher, it is important to administer the TAKS test correctly to avoid any confusion for your students. In most Texas school districts, you will only need to provide basic instructions to the students, and then collect the test booklets when they are finished with them.

Instructions

    • 1

Hand a TAKS test booklet to each student. Ensure that you are using the correct booklet for that day. For example, if your school district plans to take the reading portion of the test today, check that the booklets say "reading" on the cover.

    • 2

Inform the students of their allotted testing time. This may be different depending on your school district. Generally, students are allowed until the end of the school day to complete the test.

    • 3

Tell students that they may use the supplied reference charts that came with their test booklet if they need any additional information. These references may include math and science formulas.

    • 4

Instruct students to clearly mark each of their answers on the answer sheet. Tell them that they may only use a pencil, and not a pen, to mark answers.

    • 5

Tell students to give the test booklet and answer sheet to you when they have completed the test. Your school district may also choose to have the student wait until all of the other students have finished before collecting the test booklets.
