How to Prep for the Praxis II

The Praxis II is a series of standardized tests for people entering the teaching profession. The tests have specializations such as biology and elementary education, and also cover classroom skills that teachers must have. Most states require that teachers take the Praxis II to become licensed. As with any standardized test, doing well on the Praxis II requires preparation.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand the structure of the test. The Praxis II exam has three parts. The first section is a subject assessment, which measures both your knowledge of the subject of choice and some general knowledge that every teacher should have. The second portion assesses your knowledge of teaching and running a classroom. Finally, a teaching foundations test asks more specific questions about teaching in various subject areas.

Each test is one, two or four hours long, depending on the subject. The tests have multiple-choice, essay and constructed-response questions. Each test will vary slightly depending on your desired specialization.

Plan how you'll study for the test. The Educational Testing Service, which created the Praxis II, suggests looking at its free Test at a Glance guides to see which key concepts you should study. When you determine the areas you need to review, create a schedule so you'll have ample time to study each subject. Figuring out what you need to study will help you figure out which materials you need to collect, which areas you'll need extra time reviewing and which ones you already have a handle on.

    • 3

Organize your notes, textbooks and study materials from your college courses. Read over both your teaching and classroom management work as well as any material that will help you in your teaching specialization. If possible, visit your local library to see whether there are any textbooks for the grade level and subject you wish to teach.

    • 4

Buy a Praxis II study guide. The ETS has its own official study guides that include practice questions and suggest areas to review. You can find other Praxis II study guides at your local bookstore or at your campus bookstore.

    • 5

Take practice tests. The ETS offers practice tests that use real questions from past exams. Find a quiet spot and take the practice test as you would the actual test, giving yourself an allotted amount of time to finish it. You can also find free practice questions online that help prepare you for the types of questions you'll see on the exam.
