In Minnesota, you must be at least 19 years old to take the GED exam. However, if you are 16 to 18 years of age, you can apply for an age waiver.
To take the GED in Minnesota you must be a resident of the state. However, there are a few unusual exceptions. If you are a resident of a neighboring state, you might be able to get permission from a Minnesota testing center to take the exams there.
If you are not a United States resident; for example, you are in Minnesota on a visa, or you recently completed a foreign-exchange student program, you can take the GED as long as you meet the other criteria.
To take the GED you will have to show a valid, government-issued form of identification that includes your name, date of birth, address, photo and signature. Examples include a driver's license, Minnesota government identification card, passport, military ID, Mexican consular ID and certain Tribal IDs.
Each Minnesota GED testing center establishes its own fee structure. As of May 2010, most centers in the metropolitan Twin Cities area charge 75 to 100 dollars for the full series of five exams. Outside the urban area, expect to pay 50 to 80 dollars. If you need to re-take one of the tests, expect to pay an additional 10 to 20 dollars for each re-test.
Some scholarships are available to help you pay for the GED tests; check with your testing center to find out your options.
To receive a Minnesota GED, your overall score for all five tests added together must be at least 2,250. This means you need an average of 450 for each exam. However, if you score under 410 on any individual test you are disqualified and must re-take that test.
You can take two re-tests within a 12-month period. However, you may not take a re-test until you have first taken all five of the exams.
