CVCC: GED Requirements

Getting a General Education Development (GED) diploma is the first step in continuing an education so that you can have a higher paying job, a more rewarding career, and be more attractive to potential employers. At North Carolina's Catawba Valley Community College, getting a GED involves a series of tests that measure your knowledge in five core subjects.
  1. Study

    • While there are no requirements for a program of study for the GED, CVCC does offer courses that can be taken to prepare for it. The courses typically last one semester. Contact the admissions office at CVCC to register for the next available class. If you choose not to take a course, there are books available that can help you .

    Subjects

    • The GED is comprised of five tests. These include literature and the arts, social studies, science, math, and writing skills. Literature involves reading comprehension, and math ranges from basic addition to algebra and geometry. The tests are scheduled on one day, though if you need to retake one, you can arrange to do so. GED tests are administered at the end of the GED course at CVCC, but the tests are offered at various community colleges all over the state.

    Scores

    • To qualify for the GED, it is required that you pass all five subjects with a score of at least 60 percent on each portion. If you don't pass one section, you can retake that section at a later date. If you are enrolled in the GED course at CVCC and pass the tests, you will be eligible for a cap-and-gown graduation ceremony.
