The University of Oregon is a 295-acre campus located in Eugene, Ore., and offers almost 300 academic programs. According to their website, if applicants don't speak English as a first language, a standardized language test must be taken, but it doesn't have to be the TOEFL -- it can be the IELTS. International students also don't have to submit SAT or ACT results, unless they're applying to the Architecture program or Honors college. Conditional Admission is available to international students whose English isn't at the required level of proficiency. This means that students must attend the American English Institute (AEI) to study English intensively. After completing the highest level at the institute, the student will then be granted full admission, unless the student elects to submit an acceptable TOEFL score beforehand, although the TOEFL isn't required. The SAT is not required for general admission, although applicants must submit ACT scores instead.
The University of North Texas is located in Denton, Texas, about 30 minutes from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Approximately 2,500 of its 36,500 students are international students representing more than 125 countries around the world. Students don't have to submit SAT scores, but in its place must provide ACT scores. To be accepted to UNT, international students must provide proof of English proficiency in one of several ways, such as completing a high school diploma or degree program, or with a test score from an acceptable test. The TOEFL is accepted as well as several other tests, such as the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System. Conditional Admission is available to students who are not yet proficient in English, in which case the student will attend the IELI, the Intensive English Language Institute, and after completing the highest level at the institute will then go on fully admitted, studying for a UNT degree.
The University of Iowa is situated in Iowa City on a 1,900-acre campus and enrolls 30,000 students each year. For international students, a couple of alternatives to the TOEFL are considered acceptable, such as the ACT, SAT, or the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System. Conditional Undergraduate Admission is available to applicants who aren't proficient enough. After completing the Iowa Intensive English Program (IIEP), the student may apply for acceptance to the University of Iowa. The SAT isn't required for general admission; in its place, applicants may take the ACT.
The University of Arkansas, located in Fayetteville, Ark., offers 78 major undergraduate programs of study. It doesn't require the SAT for admission, but it does require the ACT. International students may take the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, in place of the TOEFL and they aren't required to submit ACT or SAT scores unless they are NCAA athletes or applying for a scholarship. Applicants who don't meet the required English proficiency can be offered conditional admission to the University and admission to the Spring International Language Center (SILC), where the student will intensively study English.
