American Universities That Do Not Require an SAT Subject Test

Since 1900, the College Board and its predecessors have attempted to simplify the college admissions process by providing a single set of universal tests for students. In the intervening years, many have come to feel that undue weight has been placed on SAT scores, and students have been denied college admission as a result. Because of this, the National Center for Fair & Open Testing maintains a list of colleges that have de-emphasized the SAT.
  1. Golden Gate University

    • San Francisco's Golden Gate University is doesn't require the reporting of SAT scores for admission. Freshmen may qualify for admission if they have a high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher, can show three or more years of related work experience, make their case adequately in writing, or simply interview with the admissions department. The school offers dozens of undergraduate and graduate degrees in disciplines including accounting, business management, information technology, and human resource management.

    Naropa University

    • Naropa University, in Boulder, Colorado, is open to any student with a high school diploma or GED. Application requirements include a high school transcript or GED document, three written essays, letters of reference and, optionally, submission of any creative work or writing. Non-traditional and homeschooled students are explicitly welcomed. The school's focus is on what it terms "contemplative learning," and undergraduate programs include psychology, environmental studies, religious studies, early childhood education, and writing and literature.

    George Mason University

    • George Mason University, in Fairfax, Virginia, uses the SAT reasoning test in its admissions process, but not the SAT subject tests. The process also reviews an applicant's high school GPA with an eye to the relative difficulty of the courses chosen, and requires potential students to submit a "personal statement" outlining their leadership characteristics and history of extracurricular service. The school also makes provision for homeschooled applicants, and those whose previous education may have been non-accredited.

    Agnes Scott College

    • Georgia's Agnes Scott College, in the Atlanta suburb of Decatur, is a highly selective liberal arts college for women. Reporting of SAT scores is an optional part of the admissions process, with a personal interview or a sample of written work considered a suitable alternative. ASC provides students with small class sizes, a low student/teacher ratio, and a range of undergraduate and graduate degree options. Undergraduate majors include astrophysics, engineering, international relations and creative writing.
