GED Requirements in Greenville, Texas

General Education Development (GED) tests allow those who receive a passing grade to earn high school credentials. The GED tests consist of five subject areas: social studies, reading, writing, math, and science. The test can be taken in English, French, or Spanish. Candidates with disabilities can request accommodations. To take the GED test in Texas, you must be a Texas resident and meet several other requirements.
  1. Proof of Residency

    • The GED in Texas is governed by the Texas Education Code.

All GED candidates must be residents of the state in which they are taking the test. You will need to have a government-issued ID and something that proves your Texas residency. Acceptable forms of ID include a Texas driver's license, a passport, a passport card, or military ID. Your Texas driver's license can also be used to prove your residency. If you do not have a driver's license, you can submit a utility bill or other bill with a Texas address along with your government-issued ID.

    Age Requirements

    • The GED test covers five subject areas.

Applicants for the GED must be at least 18 years of age. The Texas Education Code allows for candidates aged 17 to take the GED if they are residents of Texas, are not enrolled in school (or are enrolled in an approved GED prep course), have not graduated high school, and have permission from a parent or guardian. Texas residents aged 16 may take the GED if they are not enrolled in school, have not graduated from high school, and are either in the care of a state agency, enrolled in Job Corps, or under a court order.

The court order must meet the required finding under Section 45.054 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. Under this code, a court assumes jurisdiction over a student under Texas truancy laws, finds that the student has violated truancy laws, and then orders the student to take the GED test. If the court order does not comply with these regulations, the student may not take the GED test.
