Approximately 20-30 percent of the questions in the math portion of the GED deal with number sense and number operation. Students are permitted to use a calculator on this part of the test, which covers basic math skills relating to place value, multiplication, division, and percentages, as well as fractions and decimals.
Statistics and probability represent another 20 to 30 percent of the math portion of the GED test. Questions about finding the mean, median, and mode, as well as other probability-related questions make up this section. Estimating and predicting number sequences also comprise some of this section.
While advanced algebra and geometry concepts are not covered in the GED exam, basic algebra and geometry do comprise another 20 to 30 percent of the math portion of the test. Solving linear, quadratic, and systems equations, as well as problems relating to the Pythagorean theorem, volume, lines, angles, and graphing are all skills that must be demonstrated in order to pass this portion of the test.
