The Positive Effects of the TAKS Test

The TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge Skills) test has been under attack from special groups such as the TAKS Boycott Association. Groups like this association, as well as individuals, who are against the TAKS testing have not fully realized the advantages of tests for schools and students. While standardized testing could be used for biased funding or to communicate misinformation, the TAKS still holds enough positive qualities to be worthy in Texas public schools.
    • The TAKS test is used for curriculum improvement. Test scores are recorded, and weak areas are highlighted. After results are evaluated, school districts will concentrate on their weak areas and may offer teachers additional training to improve test scores for the following years. The TAKS tests provide a positive opportunity for districts to create professional development opportunities.

    • Standardized tests such as TAKS tests measure progress over school districts. Test scores are gathered with attention to the district in which they were administered. Overall test scores for districts demonstrate where further academic attention is needed.

    • Standardized tests demonstrate where state tax money is needed for education. Districts of Texas whose students consistently receive low test scores may need more financial attention to their public schools.
