How to Study for the Army ASVAB Test

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-choice test the U.S. military uses to determine the academic and practical capabilities and potential of applicants. Military recruiters offer the ASVAB to high school and college students as well as Army applicants, with an estimated 1 million people taking the test annually. The examination is available both as a computer test and as a hard-copy test.

Instructions

    • 1

Study the test's core subjects. A good knowledge of math, English and science is essential because you can apply it across a number of the test's areas, including general science, arithmetic reasoning, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension and mathematics knowledge.

    • 2

Familiarize yourself with the test's remaining categories. The ASVAB is challenging because it covers a wide range of topics and includes practical questions in addition to academic knowledge questions. Questions may include correctly identifying drawings of engineering equipment or predicting how an electrical circuit will behave when it is revised. The test's remaining categories include electronics information, auto information, shop information, mechanical comprehension and assembling objects.

    • 3

Examine the style of questions. Studying tests from previous years can give you an invaluable opportunity to see the exam's style and tone. The Official Site of the ASVAB contains three questions from each category, which you can use to familiarize yourself with the test's question style. The website's sample questions are linked in the Resources section.

Learn the exam process. One of the keys to exam success is relaxing, and understanding the ASVAB exam process is a way to reduce the pressure of taking the test or the anticipation of taking the test. Find out where the exam will take place, and ask whether you will take the computer test or the hard-copy test. Understand what is expected of you; if you are in doubt, address your questions to your recruitment officer.
