How to Study for Coding Speed on the ASVAB for the Army

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB, is a test administered by the U.S. armed forces. The results of the multiple-choice test determine a person's aptitudes and qualifications before entering branches of the U.S. armed forces. The coding-speed portion tests a person's ability to accurately and quickly find a specific number amongst rows of other numbers.

      Locate practice tests online through websites such as Military.com and 4tests.com. Take the test repeatedly to improve your speed, accuracy and score. Grading of the ASVAB coding test is based upon speed and accuracy.

      Time yourself or ask a friend to time you while you take the practice tests. Work to improve your speed and concentration while not compromising your accuracy.

      Ask a friend or family member to help you simulate the environment of the test. Ask them to write out or print out a sample test that comprises 84 questions, which is the amount found on the actual test. Sit down in a quiet room with a pencil, paper and no distractions. Then ask the person to score the test.

      Practice calming exercises during the practice tests and in the days before the ASVAB test. Learn which focus and relaxation techniques work for you, such as deep breathing, and use these techniques to help calm your nerves before attempting the test.
