How to Get in the National Guard With No GED in Texas

How can men or women get into the Texas National Guard without a General Education Diploma (GED)? The answer is that legally, they can't. The U.S. Military has minimum education requirements for all state National Guard programs, and applicants from Texas cannot enlist in any Guard unit without a diploma. Fortunately, the Army National Guard has a program, GED Plus, that not only helps recruits get their GED, but to receive a wage while they attend training. National Guard GED Plus is a course of instruction where military recruits earn their GED in less than a month. GED Plus classes are held at Camp Robinson, North Little Rock, Arkansas for three weeks. During the program, student recruits are trained in both military and academic classes. GED Plus is available to recruits in all states, including Texas.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact a Texas Army National Guard (TXARNG) recruiter by phone (512-782-5165), Internet (http://www.agd.state.tx.us/jobs/default.asp), or in person at a local Guard unit (http://www.gotxsg.com/units.php?send_to_url=/join.php). If you are not personally meeting with a recruiter for your first inquiry, a TXARNG professional will contact you and discuss your basic information. This procedure is the same for enlistment in the National Guard in all states.

    • 2

Inquire about the GED Plus with the TXARNG recruiter and see if you qualify for the program. Basic qualifications for the TXARNG include:

Good health and no major physical handicaps

Obtain a minimum qualifying score on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery test (ASVAB)

Between the ages of 17 and 35

      Meet citizenship requirements

    • 3

Schedule the ASVAB test with your recruiter. The ASVAB is designed to find out your personal and intellectual strengths and to identify your ideal National Guard job. The test is free, and your recruiter will make arrangements for the testing time, place, and your transportation.

    • 4

Complete the enlistment process. If you have met your minimum enlistment requirements and passed the ASVAB with a minimum score of 50, you are sent to your Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) for a full physical, selection of your MOS (Military Occupational Specialty), and arrangements for your GED Plus training. The MEPS is determined by your recruiter who will make all travel arrangements, issue you your duty orders and explain the process. If all the paperwork is complete and enlistment requirements are met, you are sworn into the National Guard.

    • 5

Report to the National Guard GED Plus school in Little Rock, Arkansas, for the three week training program. Your recruiter will explain what to do and make all your travel and living arrangements. Be sure to follow all the arrangements and orders.
