Enroll in an accredited GED program in the Louisiana parish where you live. If you are 17 or 18, this is a requirement. If you are older than 19, you can apply to take the test without enrolling in classes or passing a qualifying exam. Check with your local high school for contact information on the adult education program in your area.
Obtain a letter from the school system stating you have officially withdrawn if you are 17 or 18. You can then officially register with the adult education program. Through the adult education program, you will be assigned teachers who will construct a plan of study for you based on your needs.
Study for the exam on your own and in the free classes provided through the Louisiana Department of Education. Pay special attention to any of the five areas in which you are weaker. Students must score an average of 450 on the five exams with no score lower than 410.
Pass the qualifying exams, if necessary, to show readiness for the official exam. Students who are ages 17 or 18 must take and pass the qualifying exam, called the Official One-Half Length GED Test. Passing the tests requires the same scores as the GED -- an overall score of 450 on the exam and a score of at least 410 on each of the exam's five subtests.
Apply to take the GED exam at one of the participating test locations. As of March 2011, the registration fee was $40.
