How to Get a School Driving Permit

Depending on which state you reside, the rules for getting your instructional, learner's or provisional driving permit are different -- even the eligible ages change from state to state. Getting this permit, which allows you to practice driving as long as a licensed driver is with you, is necessary for you to participate in a school's driver's education program. With a little preparation, you can easily get your permit and hit the road.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up a copy of the state driving manual from your local license branch or Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).

    • 2

Review the requirements specific to your state pertaining to getting a learner's permit while enrolled in driver's education through your school. Some states, like Kansas, allow you to get your permit as early as 14, but most require you to be at least 15.

    • 3

Present to the BMV proof of your identity, two documents showing your current address and your enrollment certificate for the school driver's education class.

    • 4

Take a written test and vision test at the BMV. Some states do not require this until you apply for your driver's license, while others will waive the written test for a permit with a signed certificate of enrollment in driver's education.

    • 5

Pay fees and have your parent sign for legal and financial responsibility while at the BMV.

    • 6

Take your picture at the BMV for the permit and begin driving.
