How to Get Free School Help

While there is a wide range of options available to struggling students who are able to pay for school help, those who are unable to do so may feel frustrated and disadvantaged. Fortunately, students who can't afford to hire a tutor can, with some tenacity and hard work, find a way to get free school help. Students who need academic assistance should never be afraid or ashamed to ask for help, even if they can't afford to pay for it.

Use the Internet. There is a vast array of information available online that can benefit students who need this assistance. Much of it is submitted by teachers, persons with experience in relevant disciplines, and other knowledgeable sources. A quick Internet search can reveal answers to common questions on almost any subject, ranging from science to history to math. Students without a computer can find this information through free Internet access at public libraries or in schools. When looking for information, try a wide range of keywords; for example, when trying to get help with a history paper on Abraham Lincoln, try searching phrases such as "Civil War," "emancipation," and "1860s."

Use the library. While utilizing library resources may not be as speedy as using the Internet, libraries do offer a lot of information for free. One benefit a library has over the Internet is the authority of its sources; you may have to filter through less misinformation in the library than you might online. While at the library, employ the free assistance of the librarian, who may be able to help you narrow or broaden your search and suggest helpful resources.

Ask your teacher. If you are struggling in a subject, your teacher is obligated -- and generally ready and willing -- to provide free help with that subject. While your teacher will not be able to provide you with unlimited time and assistance, she is a valuable resource to you in pinpointing specific problem areas, giving you information, and helping you meet requirements. She may also be able to suggest free educational resources that are available in your school or community.

Get help from a tutor for free by trading services, requesting a scholarship or going through a school- or community-sponsored tutoring program. If you absolutely need the focused, one-on-one attention of a tutor, these are a few ways to obtain tutoring services for free. Ask a family member, local organization or church group to sponsor you and pay for your tutoring service. Offer to trade a good or service (such as babysitting or yard work) with a tutor in exchange for free school help. Or, ask your teacher or local community center if your school, town or county offers free tutoring services to students in need.
