Ask your student's teacher whether she can give your child extra help during recess or after school. If the teacher is concerned enough about your child's academic performance, she will take it upon herself to help the child.
Apply for a free tutor. If your child has been categorized as "needs improvement" for reading, he might qualify for a free tutor, provided by the federal government under its "No Child Left Behind" law. Under this law, any student who shows signs of decreased literacy skills can receive free tutoring.
Attend free tutoring sessions at a university or library in your area. Many universities and libraries have free tutoring sessions that you can sign up for. Call ahead to book a tutor and to see when the sessions are available.
Trade services or other goods for tutoring. If you have a particular skill or service, you can advertise to swap your services in exchange for free tutoring.
