How to Help My Second Grader With Reading

Children in the second grade no longer read simple stories like Cat in the Hat, as a their vocabulary and reading comprehension are much more advanced than that of a kindergarten student. However, that doesn't mean that second graders don't need help in reading. Parents can create simple exercises using books, note cards and markers to encourage a second grader's interest in reading. Reading exercises may help improve language comprehension and build confidence in the second grade reader.

Instructions

    • 1

Set aside 30 minutes each day to read with your second grader. Permit him to read two to three books out loud to build confidence when reading. Reading out loud is especially useful for children with speech impediment problems. Talk about the story after to ensure he comprehends what has been read.

    • 2

Read the difficult words with your second grader, and teach her the correct pronunciation of each word. Explain the definition of each word to her. Then, use the word in a sentence, separate from how it is used in the book, for better understanding.

    • 3

Write words he is learning at school or having difficulty with on blank note cards with a marker. Provide a definition of the word on the card as well. Show the word cards to him and assist him in reading the word if difficult to pronounce. Then ask him to use the word in a sentence to reinforce the word's meaning.

    • 4

Encourage her to make her own books. Fold four 8 ½-by-11-inch sheets of paper in half. Instruct her to write sentences on each page along with illustrations using markers or crayons to create a story. Then allow her to read the story out loud to others. Writing helps children understand stories better and enriches their reading experience.

Visit the library often and check out books that are of interest to your second grader. Children are more likely to take an interest in reading when they are read books they like. Also subscribe to children's magazines such as National Geographic Kids to engage his interest in world outside of his own.
