How to Register to Take Medical Coder Exams

A medical coder is someone who is responsible for determining the diagnosis codes that go along with certain medical procedures. These codes are used in the medical billing process, allowing service providers to get compensation for their work. There are two bodies in the United States that certify medical coders: the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Each organization specializes in different areas of medical coding. The registration procedures are similar, but you must determine which exam you need to take before attempting to register for either.

Instructions

  1. AAPC Exam Registration

    • 1

Navigate your Web browser to the official AAPC website, and click "Find Examination." Scroll down to the bottom of the page and download the examination application PDF to your computer. Save it to your desktop or some place that is easily accessible.

    • 2

Enter your country and state information on the same page, and click search to find the exam location closest to you.

    • 3

Click the "Details" link next to your desired location, and make note of the exam date and the registration deadline. Scroll down and renew your AAPC membership, if necessary, or indicate that your membership is current.

    • 4

Select the exam for which you wish to register: one of the core tests or a specialty exam. Enter your AAPC student code if you have one. You do not need an AAPC student code to register. Check the boxes confirming that you have read the terms and conditions and that you agree to fax in additional information as necessary. Click "Purchase" to enter your payment details.

    • 5

Fill out the application PDF completely, including your signature and the date. Return the application as soon as possible via postal mail, fax or email. Await confirmation that the AAPC received and processed your registration. Unless you have not provided an email address, you should expect your confirmation to be delivered via email. Bring your confirmation with you on test day.

    AHIMA Exam Registration

Navigate your Web browser to the official AHIMA website. Find the area to register for the core exam. If you are looking for a specialty exam, select it in the left sidebar and continue with the steps.

    • 7

Click "Exam Application" and download the PDF to your computer. You may also register and pay for this exam online. If you wish to set up an online account with AHIMA, click "Register Online" and follow the prompts.

    • 8

Fill out the PDF application completely, and write a check for payment of the exam fees if you did not complete registration and payment online. Mail the completed application to the address indicated on page one of the document.

    • 9

Confirm that your application has been received and is complete. The AHIMA sends an email when it receives your information, but the process can take up to four weeks to process. Unless you have not provided an email address, you will get an email notification of your authorization to test, and you will have an eligibility period during which you must complete your exam. The eligibility period at the time of publication is four months. If you do not receive a letter in the mail or an email within four weeks, call and check the status of your documents.

    • 10

Use the AHIMA website to schedule your exam at a testing center near you within your eligibility period, or you must apply and pay for registration again.
