Cut three circles of different sizes from white construction paper and tape them to a wall as the snowman base of a Silly Snowman game. Place the largest circle at the bottom, the next largest in the middle and the smallest at the top. For the playing pieces, cut out a carrot-shaped triangle from orange construction paper, three black circles for buttons and two blue circles for eyes. Place these in a gallon-size plastic bag. Add two 12-inch brown paper strips, two black paper boot shapes and a hat shape to the bag. Make a set of index cards with the names of all these items. Place the cards in another bag labeled "what." Write phrases on another set of cards that tell the children where to place the various "what" items, such as "on top of the head" and "in the middle of his tummy." Come up with 10 commands. Place these in a bag labeled "where." Show the class the playing pieces . Ask them to guess where on the snowman each piece would belong. Grab a roll of tape so you can apply a small loop to the playing pieces as they are used. Choose a child to go first. Let him draw cards from the "what" and "where" bags. Read the cards aloud. The child will choose the named playing piece and stick it where the command card indicates.
Collect six empty, clear soda bottles to use for bowling pins. Pour three or four tbsp. of white tempera paint into each soda bottle. Replace the lids and let your preschoolers take turns shaking the bottles until the white paint coats the inside. Draw a snowman face on each soda bottle. Set up the snowman pins in a triangle--one in front, two behind and three in a row in the back. Let preschoolers roll a ball into the pins to try to knock them all down.
Draw 10 simple snowman shapes on the inside of a file folder. Cut two sets of 10 different colored construction paper "scarves," sized to fit the snowmen on the folder. Use a glue stick to glue one set of the scarves to the snowmen's necks. Put the other set of scarves in a zippered plastic bag and place the bag in the file folder. To play, children open the folder, take scarves from the bag, then match them to the scarves glued to the snowmen. Laminate the folder and the colored scarves for durability.
