Free Preschool Valentine Crafts

After the Christmas excitement has passed and the resulting January bills roll in, parents can be reluctant to spend a lot on Valentine's Day crafts. If store-bought craft kits don't fit into your February budget, consider making Valentines with children, from inexpensive supplies that still deliver heart-warming results.
  1. Pocket of Kisses

    • Cut the pocket from an old article of child's clothing. Choose the back pocket from a pair of jeans or a patch pocket from an outgrown sweater. Trim the ends so there are no fraying edges. Give kids an assortment of sequins, glitter-glue pens and small embellishments to glue to the front of the pocket. Use fabric glue or strong craft glue to attach the objects. Let the glue dry. Provide chocolate candy Kisses for the children to place inside the pockets. For a very inexpensive craft, substitute paper hearts instead of candy. Write "I Love You" or "For My Valentine" on the hearts. Wrap the Valentine pockets in pink or red tissue paper and give them as gifts.

    Pop-Up Valentine

    • Fold a piece of red 9 inch x 12 inch construction paper in half. Open it and help your child write "Happy Valentine's Day" on the left side. Fold a piece of pink construction paper and draw two half hearts along the folded edge, then cut out the heart shapes. Unfold one and set it aside to use later as the back of a small heart shaped picture frame. Draw a smaller heart along the folded edge of the second pink paper heart. Cut away the smaller heart and open the shape to reveal a "frame." The frame heart will have an open, smaller heart-shaped space in the middle so when it is glued to the solid heart and child's picture, it creates a frame effect. Trim and glue a picture of your child to the first, solid heart then glue the "frame" heart over the picture. Cut a 6-inch long and 1-inch wide strip of red construction paper. Fold the paper strip--accordion-style--and attach one end to the back of the framed heart picture with tape. Tape the other end of the folded paper strip to the center of the right inside section of the card. Close the card. When the card is opened, the heart picture will pop out. Let your child decorate the front of the card with glued-on Valentine's Day conversation hearts and crayons or markers. Place a folded heart sticker on the open edge of the card to keep it closed before presenting it to a loved one on Valentine's Day.

    Heart Sun Catcher

    • Make shavings from small bits of old crayons with a cheese grater. Cut two heart shapes from wax paper. Let the amount of shavings you make be your guide for the size of the hearts. A tablespoon-sized heap of shavings will work for a sun catcher that is 4 inches long and 4 inches wide. Sprinkle the shavings onto the one of the heart shapes. Place the other wax-paper heart on top. An adult should place the craft on an ironing board and cover the heart with a towel, then iron over the heart until the crayon shavings melt. Let the craft cool. Punch a hole near the top of the center of the heart, then thread through and tie a loop of red or pink ribbon. Hang the Valentine sun catcher in a window.
