Stars & Moon Activities & Crafts for Preschool

When a preschool child looks at the night sky, his eyes see thousands of stars and his mind fills with dozens of questions. The child who still loves to sing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" dreams about traveling to a star in a rocket ship. Channel preschoolers' imagination with activities and crafts about the stars and the moon.
  1. Moon Art Activities

    • Read "Goodnight Moon" to introduce an art activity. Provide trays of white paint and assorted colors of construction paper. Give the children balloons that have been inflated to produce a variety of sizes. Show the children how to dip their balloons in the paint and gently press the balloons on the construction paper. Another option is to let the preschoolers create moon dust pictures. To create moon dust, combine equal parts of any color dry tempera paint and clean dry sand. Add gold or silver glitter and keep in an airtight container. Use baby food jars to make shakers for the children. Punch a few holes in the jar lid, add some moon dust and screw the lid onto the jar securely. Give each child a shaker, white glue and color construction paper. Demonstrate how to drip the glue onto the paper and shake the moon dust on top of the glue. Allow the glue to dry, shake off the excess moon dust and place it in the airtight container.

    My Constellation Activity

    • Ask the children to place star stickers on black construction paper. Give each child a piece of chalk and ask them to connect the stars to create a constellation. Follow the constellation activity with an edible star snack. For each child, toast two slices of bread. Let the children cut the bread into star shapes with star cookie cutters and spread jam on the stars.

    Rocket Ship Craft Activity

    • Provide a toilet paper roll and piece of aluminum foil for each child. Show the children how to cover the toilet paper roll with the foil. Help them glue a cone-shaped paper cup to one end of the toilet paper roll to form the top of the rocket. Let the children glue or tape red tissue paper strips to the bottom of the toilet paper roll to make flames. The children can decorate their rocket ships with markers, sequins and stickers.

    Preschoolers On The Moon

    • Print a copy of an astronaut on the moon. Cut out the astronaut's face and replace it with a child's face. Reprint the astronaut picture with the child's face. Make a preschooler astronaut for each child.
