Preschool Teaching Games

Games are a valuable resource when it comes to teaching preschool students. Learning through play is an easy activity for children so young, and games are so fun children don't relate it to work. From sharing to number memorization, alphabet lessons and colors can all be game based activities.
  1. Alphabet games

    • Alphabet bingo, alphabet hunt, and disappearing letters are all fun alphabet preschool games. Design a bingo style card with letters for a fun activity in letter retention. Placing letters on items in the class and sending the children on a scavenger hunt can be a good game for letter recognition. Disappearing letters is played by the teacher writing letters on a chalk board, and the children using a small paint brush dipped in water to copy and 'erase' the letters. This teaches retention while the kids have fun making the letters disappear.

    Color games

    • Find your color, color match, and rainbow activities are fun games for color memorization. Have the children find items in the room of a particular color for find your color. Matching colors is done by creating large color circles from construction paper, then giving the students a collection of smaller colored circles to match to the larger ones. Rainbow activities can be creating a rainbow bottle by painting small rocks in a variety of colors and putting them in used soda bottles, or matching the colored rocks into small cups of a corresponding color.

    Numbers

    • Number hunt to find numbers on items throughout the class room can be a fun game for preschoolers and teach number recognition. Count and sort games like muffin tin math teach sorting and counting. Mark cupcake liners with simple numbers, then give the students paper clips, small building blocks or marbles to place in the correct cups. Any learning rhymes that have numbers the children can sing are also fun games that reinforce number learning.

    Abstract Learning

    • Who's hiding, Simon Says and games of this sort teach a variety of lessons in a fun way. Have one student go out of the room or hide their eyes, then hide another student. Have the class give the student clues without telling which student is missing, and see if they can figure it out. Simon Says, Red Light Green Light or musical chairs are fun interactive games that teach direction and organization.
