The Scholastic website's "Clifford the Big Red Dog Interactive Storybook" sound matching game lets preschool students find and match the first letter sounds of words. Students click on a picture on the top of the game and hear a word, such as "mop." Students compare this word to pictures at the bottom of the page, such as a cow or mittens. They can click on each picture to hear the word. When they find pictures with the same first letter sound, they put them in the word box. If it is correct, the word becomes part of their word list.
"Gus the Duck," a phonics game from the Starfall website, helps students learn how to blend letter sounds to form words. This game teaches the short u sound in "duck." The students hear the story of Gus the duck read one sentence at a time and watch the funny animations. As they click on each word of the sentence, individual letters are sounded out, blending letter sounds to form the word. The word is repeated and the student moves to the next word of the sentence.
"Wild West Phonics," a game on the BBC Schools website, asks students to add the missing letter sound needed to complete a word. The game presents a word and the students choose from three letters to complete the word. They can click on the "listen again" button if they need to hear the word again. If they make the correct letter choice, there is a celebration and the student gets a new word. If they are not correct, the game invites them to try again.
"Phase 2 Initial Sounds," one of the Letters and Sounds website games, helps students learn to match the beginning sound of words with the letters that make these sounds. The game is set in an ancient castle with a soldier standing on a turret. Students click the castle shutters to find and match the pictures and first letter sounds for this Concentration type game. The soldier celebrates each time a picture is matched with a letter.
