The Discovery School has been operating since 1974 as a means of helping children make the transition to an educational environment. While there are many educational preschool programs in San Antonio, less than 5 percent are accredited, and the Discovery School boasts accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The Discovery School is private, non-profit, tax-exempt and multi-denominational. Its curriculum includes early educational curriculum, games and resources. The school also offers flexible education plans, based on the availability of parents and students.
Established in 1980 by Kitty and Rich Lange, the Acorn, a private, non-profit preschool and kindergarten, is housed in a building originally built in 1918. The Acorn provides both an indoor learning environment separated by age group and an outdoor shaded playground area for physical development and science and nature experiments and discoveries. Preschool classes average five students per teacher, and include appropriate education and nutritional development during school hours.
Founded in 1997 by a former elementary school teacher, Giant Steps Early Learning School offers several early learning programs for children of differing years and development. For young children aged 3, there are programs available that emphasize motor skills and more advanced literature, music, art, science and cooking skills.
Kriterion Montessori School's curriculum for its young students is driven by their own interests. Teachers help to develop young students' motor skills, self-esteem, creativity and the educational skills needed for mathematics and literature. The emphasis in the Kriterion's teaching methods is for each student to become self-motivated, with a focus on each student's creativity, skills and educational strengths.
