In northwest San Antonio at the South Texas Medical Center, the University of Texas' School of Nursing is the one of largest school for health science education in the state. The campus provides facilities for over 4,000 graduates a year in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program requires students to have completed at least 62 semester hours in a pre-nursing program before applying to the nursing program. Once admitted, students work to complete at least 60 more semester hours at the School of Nursing before earning their diploma.
The Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing at the University of the Incarnate Word offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees in health sciences, including programs for a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The school provides a regular and accelerated track for students earning a nursing diploma, both requiring students to complete 130 credits to be eligible to take the state licensure examination. The college boasts an above average passing rate among its graduates.
Galen College is a private for-profit network of colleges with a campus in San Antonio. Offering a Registered Nurse bridge program as well as two-year Vocational Nursing program, the college is geared for students seeking continued education. The curriculum is composed of in-class lab work as well as on-site clinical experience at health centers throughout the community. The school provides evening classes for busy students as well as accelerated learning programs for those looking to quickly complete their training.
The Baptist Health System maintains an extensive network of clinics through the city, as well as an accredited program for earning vocational diplomas in health care sciences. Providing an accelerated track as well as evening courses, the curriculum is focused on providing hands-on learning experience in addition to the routine lab work. The program lasts two years and requires prerequisites in anatomy, microbiology and psychology.
