Shelton is a private school that specializes in helping children with learning "differences." The school is for students from pre-school age all the way up through 12th grade. Shelton focuses on helping students who learn differently but have average or above-average intelligence. Students may have disabilities like: dyslexia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), attention-deficit disorder (ADD), speech disorders and language disorders. The potential student is first assessed at the Evaluation Center to determine what disability he has and the best way to help him learn. The school has a student-to-teacher ratio of 6:1, as of the 2011 academic year. Students who need help outside of the full-time school can take advantage of intensive instruction on weekends and in the summer.
