The Association for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities operates the ACLD Tillotson School in Pittsburgh. This school serves students between the ages of 7 and 21 who live throughout several western Pennsylvania counties. Easter Seals Disability Services of Western Pennsylvania provides a school program for children ages 2 to 8. Easter Seals schools are available at four different locations throughout the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The school program accepts students with neurological disorders, autism and other physical and mental conditions that impair learning in a traditional classroom. Easter Seals utilizes individual education plans and limits most class sizes to eight students. The curriculum focuses on helping students to develop self-sufficiency. School staff includes occupational and physical therapists, speech language pathologists, teachers and social workers.
Elizabeth Lee Black School in Erie is an outreach of the Barber National Institute. This school serves students ages 3 to 21 with autism, multiple physical or mental disabilities, psychiatric disabilities and other disorders that make traditional classroom learning difficult. All campus facilities, including an on-site pool, are accessible to students with physical disabilities. Elizabeth Lee Black School features an educational curriculum for deaf students in addition to its learning disabilities program. Students learn in classrooms tailored to their specific needs. Specialized classrooms include light and sound adjustment technologies and independent work stations.
Pace School in Pittsburgh serves students in kindergarten to 9th grade with autism, developmental delays, learning disabilities and psychiatric disorders. Pace offers individual education plans and mental health support in accordance with student diagnoses. The school may test students upon enrollment to determine the need for speech therapy, occupational therapy, counseling and social work services. The curriculum at Pace involves academic, life skills and emotional regulation development. Pace encourages parent involvement and offers frequent opportunities for parents to participate in school activities. The school prepares students for future public school placement when appropriate.
