Schools for Students With Learning Disabilities Near Seattle

According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities, nearly 2.5 million students are currently receiving services for learning disabilities in the United States. Public schools in Seattle are required to implement programs for students with learning disabilities, but parents also have the option of enrolling their child in a private school dedicated to students with learning disabilities. These private schools in Seattle, Washington, all offer instruction to students with various learning disabilities and provide the student with the skills necessary to succeed in further education or the career of choice.
  1. Hamlin Robinson School

    • The Hamlin School specializes in teaching children with dyslexia and other related language difficulties. At least three hours of the student's day are spent on basic skills related to language development. The school caters to children at the elementary and middle school levels. Self-advocacy skills are taught to enable the child to realize her disorder and speak up for herself. Instruction is based on a multisensory language approach to enable the child to use her other senses to comprehend the material. The Hamlin School has a full academic curriculum.

    Dartmoor School

    • Dartmoor School offers one-on-one instruction to the individual student. The instruction is based on the child's current learning styles and pace. Faculty works to cultivate the unique talents of each student and get him actively involved in his own education. Students in Grades 1 through 12 are admitted. A supplemental enrollment program enables students enrolled at a separate school to work on problem areas through tutoring. The dual enrollment program allows the student to take problem classes at the Dartmoor School while attending her home school for the rest of her curriculum. The full-time program allows the student to attend Dartmoor School for the full range of curriculum. The school uses technology to enhance learning and it also has a summer program available.

    CHILD -- Children's Institute for Learning Differences

    • The CHILD school offers programs for children ages 3 to 18. They offer instruction for children with learning disabilities and behavioral disorders. The goal of the school is to ultimately reintegrate the child into a traditional school. The teachers provide support for the child in learning social, emotional, developmental and neurological strategies to approach his disorder. Limited financial aid is available through the school. CHILD is located about seven miles outside of Seattle on Mercer island.

    New Horizons School

    • The New Horizons School places the child in grade-level homerooms while providing skill groups for the core academic subjects and peer groups for science, social studies and physical education. Electives are offered to the child in various fine arts and technical skills. The school offers an on-site language therapist and mental health counselor. The New Horizons School expects the family to play a vital role in the child's education and considers all staff and faculty to be responsible for all students. They admit students in Grades 6 through 12. The New Horizons School is located in Renton, Washington, approximately 12 miles outside of Seattle.
