Alternative Schools in Prince George's County, Maryland

Prince George's County, Maryland, offers a wide choice of public, traditional private and alternative schools. An alternative school is an educational establishment that uses informal, nontraditional curriculum and methods. Montessori schools create an environment to encourage self-directed learning activity. Other private schools that provide small teacher to student ratios and a customized education also qualify as alternative schools.
  1. John Hanson French Immersion School

    • John Hanson French Immersion School is a public alternative school for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. This magnet school teaches through immersion in the French language. The school has a staff that comes from 15 countries.

    John Hanson Montessori School

    • John Hanson Montessori School is a public alternative school in the southern section of Prince George's County for students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Students are chosen by lottery. The school shares its faculty with John Hanson French Immersion School.

    Julia Brown Montessori Schools

    • The Julia Brown Montessori School in Laurel is one of four campuses of the school that offers an education to students from nursery school through third grade. The Laurel school is a single-story structure of 3,600 square feet on a 1 1/3-acre lot with two playgrounds. Primary classrooms have mixed age groups of children 2 1/2 to 5 1/2 years and junior classrooms have mixed age groups of children 5 1/2 to 9 years.

    Bowie Montessori Children's House

    • Bowie Montessori Children's House is a non-profit, non-discriminatory and non-sectarian school set on a 22-acre ecological campus. The school includes programs for nursery school, kindergarten, and grades 1 through 8.

    The Foundation School

    • The Foundation Schools are independent non-profit schools for special education. These therapeutic day schools were established to meet the needs of children with emotional disturbances. The Foundation School in Largo is for students in grades 1 through 12.

    Augsburg Academy

    • Augsburg Academy is an Evangelical Lutheran day school for kindergarten through 12th grade. It features small classes with individualized attention. Augsburg Academy is divided into four schools. The lower school is comprised of a 4-year-old kindergarten, 5-year-old kindergarten and first and second grades. The upper school includes grades 3 through 5. Middle school holds grades 6 through 8. The high school is for grades 9 through 12.

    New Hope Academy

    • New Hope Academy is an independent international private school. Located on an eight-acre campus, the school offers an education to children from preschool through grade 12. Students represent more than 20 faiths and 35 nationalities. High school students score in the top 10 percent on the SAT nationally.
