The Grant Alternative School is located on Ottawa's Draper Street and was opened in 1991. With a population of roughly 100 students as of 2010, Grant Alternative School's alternative philosophy focuses on some basic tenets. Riverview Alternative School is located on Knox Crescent in southeast Ottawa, Ontario. Classes range from junior kindergarten to grade six. As do Lady Evelyn and Grant Alternative Schools, Riverview's alternative philosophy focuses on hands-on activities, intensive parental involvement, and achieving harmony between student-centered and teacher-directed learning. The staff includes 17 teachers, 4 support staff and 2 educational assistants, one of whom works part-time. Teachers at this school have qualifications in areas such as deaf education, athletics coaching and sign language. Riverview Alternative School provides students with a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, special education programs and English as a second language programs.
Churchill Alternative School is located on Ravenhill Ave. Opened in 1984, Churchill Alternative School is the second of six elementary schools in the city to offer an alternative program, which is an English/Core French option. This school also goes up to the sixth grade, and the student population is approximately 345, as of 2010. The alternative philosophy of this school is focused on student learning and supported by the fact that Churchill Alternative School views student learning as a responsibility shared by parents, teachers and children. Classrooms are organized in multi-age groupings and feature group instruction and activity-based learning. Children are offered a variety of after-school athletics and activities.
