Schools for the Disabled in Puerto Rico

Finding a school for your child can be a difficult choice, especially if you need to find a school for the disabled. There are many things to take into consideration, including price, the type of care and location. Puerto Rico is a small island and it is difficult finding schools that fit the needs of every student. Your choices may be limited in Puerto Rico, but there are resources that can help.
  1. Public Schools

    • There are 1,531 schools in Puerto Rico. Facilities for special education have been made available in Puerto Rico's public schools. About 80 percent of children in Puerto Rico attend public schools; 86 percent of those students come from families that are living beneath the poverty level. Only 42 percent of children attending public schools graduate.

    Private Schools

    • Private schools are another option for special education. Although only 20 percent of Puerto Rico's students attend private school, 99 percent of them graduate high school and 100 percent of those students are accepted into universities in Puerto Rico.

    Evangelical School for the Deaf

    • Children who attend the Evangelical School learn ASL.

      Deaf students in Puerto Rico have the option of attending the Evangelical School for the Deaf, a private Christian school. This school is the only English language school for the deaf in Puerto Rico. It is located in Barrio Casa Blanca of Luquillo.

    Instituto de Deficiencias en el Desarrollo

    • This institute helps to educated the community, other educators and people with disabilities on working with the disabled. It is meant for taking continuing education classes and earning certificates for working with the disabled. For parents, it can be a great resource.
