Schools for the Developmentally Disabled in Pennsylvania

Developmental disabilities refer to lifelong conditions caused by birth defects that impact an individual's physical or mental capacity. In the United States, no one with a disability may be excluded from a public school. However, public schools without special education programs must refer a student to schools serving children with special needs. Public and private schools exist throughout the United States, including several in Pennsylvania. Schools serving developmentally disabled students usually combine therapy with education and may offer programs to help older students get, keep and succeed at a job.

  1. Camphill Special School

    • The Camphill Special School, located in Glenmoore, Pennsylvania, offers education, therapy and boarding for students in grades kindergarten through 12 who have intellectual or developmental disabilities. The Camphill Special School curriculum is built on the philosophy of Austrian educator Rudolf Steiner, who believed in educating the entire person. Traditional academics are mixed with practical skills like woodworking and sewing and exposure to dramatic, music and movement arts. The school offers art and music therapies as well as social, cultural and athletic activities.

    Clark Schools for Hearing and Speech

    • The Clark School, located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, provides specialized education for children who are deaf or who suffer hearing loss. The school serves students in elementary and middle school and has programs for babies and preschoolers. The Clark School also offers summer programs as well as programs to help children and families transition from a Clark program to a mainstream school.

    Shawnee Academy

    • The Shawnee Academy, located in Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pennsylvania, serves students ages 5 through 21 who have a cognitive impairment, a specific learning disability or an emotional disturbance. The school takes a holistic approach to education and encourages creativity, independence and achievement, according to its website. Older students participate in school-to-work programs and may be able to find employment on Shawnee's campus.
