Treloar is a U.K. school for students with physical disabilities. Most students are ages 9 to 16, but sometimes the school continues to work with students up to the age of 19. Treloar has 100 residential students and 40 day students. It works with both boys and girls and is one of the largest and most respected schools for the physically disabled in the U.K. Seventy percent of students at Treloar have cerebral palsy, 90 percent use wheelchairs and 40 percent have speech difficulties.
Melmark in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, serves students who are mentally and/or physically disabled. It offers both residential and day options and has a variety of program options for disabled children and adults. The school also works with families to create care plans for students. By encouraging family involvement through visiting days and special events, Melmark tries to create the most supportive environment for its students.
Schools for the blind serve students with a variety of visual impairments and help them to adapt to their disabilities. Schools like the Perkins School for the Blind in Massachusetts and the Georgia Academy for the Blind in Macon, Georgia, provide both day and residential schooling options. Georgia Academy has been in operation since 1852; students there learn a grade-level curriculum while developing skills, such as reading braille, that will help them throughout their lives.
Schools for the Deaf like the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf in Fairibault teach a regular school curriculum while helping students to learn to work with their disabilities. Schools for the deaf teach sign language and lip-reading and also utilize assistive technologies. The Illinois School for the Deaf also offers a school-to-work program for high school students to help them adapt to a work environment before graduation.
