How to Compare School Demographics

For many parents contemplating a move--whether across town or across the country--they may want to consider a school's demographics. MuniNetGuide.com provides basic school demographic information based on data derived from the National Center for Education Statistics. MuniNet provides data for public elementary, middle and secondary schools around the country. In addition to basic contact information for over 100,000 public schools, MuniNet Guide provides total number of enrolled students, student-teacher ratios, number of students by grade level, demographic breakdown by race.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit MuniNetGuide.com and go to the schools page to begin your search for a particular school (see Resources for link).

    • 2

Or enter the name of the city where a school is located in the search box on the home page. For example, type "Cleveland." (The search function on MuniNet is not case-sensitive.)

    • 3

Select the city from among the search results. To view data for that city, including schools, click on the entry that says "MuniNet Guide's profile for this city/town/municipality." (If a link does not say that it is a MuniNetGuide profile, it will take you to that city's home page.)

    • 4

Scroll down the page to a list of schools located in that city. Schools are listed by category: primary, middle, high, then "Other," which encompasses charter schools and special public schools.

    • 5

Select a school, and click on the link for detailed demographic data.

    • 6

Note the demographic information listed for that school.

    • 7

Repeat the steps for other schools you might be interested in. When comparing data for two or more schools, consider information in terms of your child's needs and/or your family's values.
