How to Go to a School Out of Boundaries

Public schools in the United States are affixed with relatively arbitrary district boundaries for student attendance. Some students are left out in the cold of under-performing or understaffed schools while other children get the benefit of much better educations. If your child suffers from attendance at a poorly performing school, there are a few ways to go to a school out of the district area.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine your legal options based on your district's policies. Either meet with a local lawyer or examine the district's policies.

    • 2

Apply for out of district schools if your area allows it. This is especially likely if the other school has a specialty program such as honors, math, science, film or art. Meet all of the deadlines well in advance and double check all submissions.

    • 3

Apply for a lottery number if your district provides this kind of service. Some lotteries are for charter schools such as in the case of the District of Columbia. Once you receive your tracking number you will be able to enter it on the assigned date and reveal whether you are accepted.

    • 4

Use a relative's address to send your child to an out of area school if all else fails. This may require the student to stay with the relative during the week for convenience and legal reasons.
