How to Help Schools Go Green

Schools teach children the skills necessary for life. When a school "goes green," it is teaching children about protecting and caring for the environment. Parents, teachers and other school officials can work to make each school environmentally friendly and teach the children that taking care of our resources is an important task. Getting a green program started in the schools is the first step to improving the future.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact a teacher or school official who is interested in the subject about starting a school program for "going green." Volunteer your services and form a committee with the school's staff to discuss ways to implement it.

    • 2

Start a recycling program at the school. One of the easiest and first steps to going green at schools is to get a recycling program going. It requires a recycling bin next to a trashcan in every room and requirements for which materials go in the trash and which go into the recycle bin.

    • 3

Fill out grant applications to fund green projects at the school. Grants require the permission of the school, so bring up the idea at the next PTA meeting and obtain the appropriate permission before applying. There are grants available specifically for green projects in schools, which can fund recycling programs or energy saving programs and obtain recycled materials for student use.

    • 4

Work with teachers to develop green educational programs for the students, such as eco-friendly science projects or waste reduction clubs. Teaching children about ways to go green is as important as starting up energy saving programs or recycling programs at the school. Children should be educated in how to make eco-friendly decisions.
