How to Transfer to Secondary Schools

If you plan to attend the neighborhood high school, your records will automatically transfer. But, if you're changing schools due to a move or personal preference, the process is a bit more complicated. Today, students choose from a host of schooling options, including private school, traditional public school and public charter or magnet schools. Charter and magnet schools are becoming increasingly popular because they offer many of the benefits of a private school, such as rigorous academic programs or specialized curriculums, without the high tuition price. Whatever your preference, start early and research several schools before making a decision.

Instructions

    • 1

Compare details about school size, teacher experience and standardized testing results through online searches. Once you've narrowed down the schools to two or three choices, schedule visits. Talk with administrators, teachers and students during your visits. Ask about curriculum, safety, class size and teacher experience. Are extracurricular activities such as sports or arts important to you?

    • 2

Apply to schools. Contact the public school district office or the principal of a private or charter school to learn about the application process. Some schools require teacher recommendations, academic assessments or portfolio reviews as part of the application process. Ask about the process for acceptance. Does the school accept students on a lottery basis, first-come, first-serve or by referral? Many public schools have certain times during the year when they take applications from students outside their district. Don't miss any deadlines.

    • 3

Fill out all necessary paperwork and return to the school by the application deadline. Some schools require immunization records, proof of residence such as a utility bill and a copy of your birth certificate.

    • 4

Contact your previous school to transfer records to your new school. Many school districts have requirements for transferring within district, and most allow only one transfer.

    • 5

Schedule a meeting with the school counselor to register for classes and ensure your records are up to date.
