How to Fill Out a Private School Application

Determining where you want your child to attend private school can be a long process. After going to schools' open houses, meeting with administrators and researching test scores and other information, it's likely that you and your child have an idea of the school you both like. Being accepted into the school means taking a few more steps by gathering required information and submitting an application. Filling out a private school application may sound easy, but it does take effort and preparation.

Instructions

Read over the application thoroughly. Before you begin filling out the form, find out what questions are being asked. Determine how challenging or simple it will be to fill out the application. Private school applications tend to include questions that go beyond the basics, such as your child's name, address and phone number. Typically, there are a series of questions and other requirements on the application that take thought and concentration. For example, the application may ask why your child would be a good match for the school, or why your child is interested in attending the school.

Fill out the application, but be sure that it's in the form the school requires. Black ink or typed are two examples of how applications could be filled out. If you hand-write the application's answers, be sure to write legibly. Also, your answers don't have to be long and overly detailed; they can be short. Honestly answer all questions, as there is no need to exaggerate. Once you've completed the application, read it over a few times to make sure there are no punctuation errors or other grammatical mistakes. Have someone else read it as well to doubly ensure it's free of mistakes.

Gather all information required to go along with the application. Many private schools require letters of recommendation, grade reports from previous schools attended, an essay written by your child and a financial aid application if necessary. Plan ahead to ensure you have these items in plenty of time before the application is due. If you need recommendation letters, ask the individuals to write them a couple of months prior to submission. And if your child writes an essay, give her time to complete an outline, the rough draft and the final version.
