How Can I Write a Letter to My Governor to Not Close a School?

Asking a governor to decide against closing a school is way of showing him that there is resistance to the idea, and that doing so will result in unhappy constituents. The act of taking the time to write a letter to a public official is way to express how much you care about preventing the school closing, and may have a collective impact with other people writing letters as well. It is imperative to demonstrate in the letter the consequences of closing the school.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the governor's address. This will be located on his webpage or other government site. Date the letter in the top left corner of the page. Two spaces below that type the name and address of the governor. Include "The Honorable" before his name.

    • 2

Address the governor as "Dear Governor," in the salutation.

    • 3

State the purpose of writing to him. Indicate that you are asking him to not close a specified school. Provide a brief background to the situation, if necessary. This should be a short paragraph.

    • 4

Demonstrate the consequences of closing the school in two or three paragraphs. Be clear and concise. List as many reasons as possible why the school should not be closed, giving supporting evidence. Include factual references, whenever possible.

    • 5

End the letter with "Sincerely," or a similarly formal closing. Sign the letter below your printed name. Include all of your contact information beneath your signature, including address, phone number and email address.

    • 6

Spell check the letter and reread it for typing errors.
