Show the students the pumpkin. Talk to them about what might be inside. Then have them guess how many seeds the pumpkin holds and write down their guesses on the chalkboard or a large piece of paper.
Cut the top off of the pumpkin and have the children help you wash off the seeds.
Spread out the newspaper and have the students put the seeds into groups of 10. Count the piles by helping the children count to 10 for each pile of seeds.
Compare the real number of seeds with the numbers that the students had guessed at the beginning of the activity.
