How to Count Pumpkin Seeds with Preschoolers

Pumpkins are indigenous to North America. Pumpkins are harvested in the fall, making it a perfect time to talk about them with your preschoolers. There are many activities that can be done with pumpkins, such as painting, decorating and carving them. But don't forget the seeds! Counting the seeds is a good activity to help children practice estimating and counting by tens.

Instructions

    • 1

Show the students the pumpkin. Talk to them about what might be inside. Then have them guess how many seeds the pumpkin holds and write down their guesses on the chalkboard or a large piece of paper.

    • 2

Cut the top off of the pumpkin and have the children help you wash off the seeds.

    • 3

Spread out the newspaper and have the students put the seeds into groups of 10. Count the piles by helping the children count to 10 for each pile of seeds.

    • 4

Compare the real number of seeds with the numbers that the students had guessed at the beginning of the activity.
