How to Enhance Language Development in Preschoolers

According to Science Daily, preschoolers learn to speak and understand language from their teachers, parents and peers. Although there is little that teachers can do to enhance the quality of the language spoken at home, they can create a classroom environment that encourages students to speak and understand language meaningfully. The classroom is a great resource for children who are developing their language skills, and the teacher can promote this development by creating an environment that encourages children to converse openly while learning from one another.

Instructions

    • 1

Read with preschoolers daily. Reading develops and expands a child's vocabulary. It also helps with pronunciation, enunciation and fluency with reading and speaking. Read aloud to preschool children and allow them to take turns reading. Choose books that will encourage them to speak clearly and use proper grammar.

    • 2

Engage in meaningful conversation with your preschoolers. Always model the way that you want your preschoolers to speak when conversing with them. Allow them to complete their sentences and thoughts fully before correcting grammatical or structural errors. Encourage them to elaborate on their thoughts and ideas and provide positive feedback when they apply learned language skills correctly.

    • 3

Encourage peer communication. Allow preschoolers to practice their language skills in the classroom. Tell them that they must use proper English and correct grammar at all times and monitor them as they interact with one another. Be patient with students as they continue to develop their language skills and reward those who make a conscious effort to implement learned skills.
