Bulletin Board Ideas for PPCD Units

While many people think of special education as beginning in elementary school, a Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) unit provides services for children ages 3-5. As in many inclusion classrooms for older children, PPCD services are often offered in a mainstreamed classroom. The needs of children and families in PPCD units often differ from those of the mainstream students to such an extent that a bulletin board specifically for the PPCD unit can be an incredibly useful addition to the classroom.
  1. Program Specific

    • An informational bulletin board offers information about the specific PPCD program that the children attend. Information included on this type of board can include location, hours, calendar, upcoming events, announcements, staff bios, family information, contact and phone list, fees and other pertinent information. An informational board can also include data that pertains to the PPCD unit, such as how students are progressing or the statistics of the specific program versus national norms.

    Resources

    • A resource bulletin board offers resources and support to the families of students in the PPCD program. Resources can include local play or support groups, classes, activity ideas, therapy and other programs. A resource board should also cover where families can get more information about the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), navigating Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and the laws governing special education. This type of board should include both local and national resources.

    User Generated

    • A user-generated bulletin board allows the staff and families of the PPCD program to create a board filled with information that they choose to share. While there may be different sections of the board, such as "Flyers" or "Comments," the content is posted by the people involved in the program: families and staff members. This type of board is a good place to have a question-and-answer section, where someone can post a question to be answered by someone with ideas or knowledge relating to the subject.

    Activity

    • An activity board is all about what the kids are doing in the PPCD program. It can include an explanation of current activities, samples of student projects, a summary of the week, snapshots of the children taken during the program, instructions for a popular game or activity and a list of past and upcoming themes. An activity board is a good place to have a family section, which may include updates on family members who have helped out in the program.

    Assorted Board

    • An assorted board includes a variety of different topics relating to the PPCD program. While you may choose to include a topic or subject on the board, an ideal assortment board contains information from the four aforementioned categories. It should also be divided into different categories and labeled so information is easy to find and accessible. This type of board is an ideal place to put a small whiteboard for quick messages or easy updates.
