How to Make a Project With Granite Squares for Sensory

Sensory processing is a popular buzzword in education these days. The fact is, every child needs sensory experiences to encourage brain growth. Many store-bought materials meant for sensory education are expensive but you can make your own projects for use in your home or classroom in several ways. You can apply the concept of using granite squares to other materials.

Things You'll Need

  • Granite tiles (any size, with a variety of textures)
  • Large tray or flat plastic bin with low level lip
  • Plain white paper
  • Pencil or crayon

      Choose a variety of granite squares from a local home improvement store, tile store or construction supplier. Include as many textures as possible.

      Pour sand or dirt into the plastic bin.

      Wedge the granite squares into the dirt to provide stability. You may need to wet the dirt slightly. The granite should be flat and difficult to move.

      Instruct the children to describe the textures of granite. They can use their hands or feet.

      Record the granite textures with the children by placing the white paper over each square and lightly shading to form an imprint with the pencil or crayon.
