Organize parents who are already involved in school activities into teams or committees such as a prom committee or a team that supports basketball.
Communicate with parents who are already involved and with those who are not. Use email or phone messages to reach out to parents because they may not get the notices teachers send home with the students.
Understand that parents are busy with work and other commitments. Not every parent can attend every event; try to organize activities that fit in with many parents' schedules by including breakfast and weekend events instead of only the typical weekday evening PTA meetings.
Host activities that students will want to attend. When students feel involved in the school and experience school pride, they are more likely to encourage their parents to participate in school functions, too.
Provide information about volunteer activities in the school. Spark Action recommends finding projects parents can help with from home, so those who are not able to attend in-school volunteer events can still make a difference.
Request feedback from parents about how they and their children would like to be included in the middle school. You will learn different ways to reach the parents in your school. What works in some schools does not work everywhere.
