School Friendly Games for 7th Graders

Students in seventh grade love playing games, especially if they are played in class during school. It is important, however, to make sure you are exposing your seventh graders to school-appropriate games with an educational background. Introducing your students to different school-friendly games in social studies, mathematics, science and English will allow them to apply the knowledge learned in class to the games they play.
  1. A Growing Nation

    • This fun, interactive social studies game on the Super Teacher Tools website will test your seventh graders' understanding of the time period during the American industrial revolution. Similar to the popular television show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?," this game will not only serve as an educational tool, but a game your students will truly enjoy playing as well. Ask your seventh graders a series of social studies questions, starting with the easy $100 question and finishing with the final million dollar question -- 15 questions later. Like the TV show, your students will have three life lines (50/50, phone a friend and ask the expert).

    Triangle Sort

    • The Crickweb website offers a Triangle Sort game to help your students learn about triangle properties by sorting them into different Venn diagrams. Before beginning the game, show your seventh graders a short movie or PowerPoint presentation about the properties of equilateral, isosceles and scalene triangles to give them a brief review. Next, students must drag and drop each different colored triangle into its correct Venn diagram, depending on whether it is equilateral, isosceles or scalene. Then the students are asked to sort the colored triangles in a Venn diagram into categories for isosceles, right-angled or both. Finally, students are given a similar Venn diagram, as the previous one, only now the students must organize the triangles based on scalene, right-angled or both.

    The Clim Way Game

    • Clim City Online offers an engaging science computer game that helps students attempt to answer the tough questions of why global warming is increasing and how to possibly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this interactive game students create their own climate plan for a pretend community by establishing objectives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower energy consumption.

    Vocabulary Crossword Puzzles

    • Rather than pass out weekly vocabulary lists for memorization, give your students the material in crossword puzzle form. CrosswordPuzzlegames.com offers a free tool for teachers to plug in vocabulary words and their corresponding clues to create crossword puzzles. This is a great way to reinforce your seventh grade students' vocabulary and problem solving skills.
