When measuring gemstones, most jewelers measure the size of the gem in carats. However, the carat measures weight rather than volume. The carat in use today is standardized at 200 milligrams per carat, or 0.2 grams per carat, and was standardized in 1907. Originally, the carat was spelled "karat" and equaled four grains. Knowing the carat to grams conversion helps you find the mass of your gem in terms you can easily understand.

1
Multiply the number of carats by 0.2 to convert to grams. For example, if your gemstone weighs 1.4 carats, multiply 1.4 by 0.2 to get 0.28 grams.
-
2
Divide the number of carats by 5 to convert to grams to check your math. In this example, divide 1.4 by 5 to get 0.28 grams.
