How Do I Square a Fraction?

Though a fraction represents a single value, some mathematical operations treat its two numbers separately. A fraction is composed of two whole numbers, one as the numerator on top and the other as a denominator on the bottom. A proper fraction possesses a denominator that is greater than its numerator. Exponents, also defined as powers, affect a number by multiplying the number to itself an indicated number of times. Squaring a number is a term for raising it to its second power. In squaring a fraction, both its numerator and denominator are raised.

Instructions

    • 1

Multiply the numerator of the fraction by itself. In the example of 7/10, 7 multiplied by 7 equals 49.

    • 2

Multiply the denominator of the fraction by itself. In this example, 10 multiplied by 10 equals 100.

    • 3

Place the square of the numerator over the square of the denominator. Concluding this example, placing 49 over 100 equals 49/100. The square of 7/10 is 49/100.
