When shopping for jewelry, stones are often measured in carats. However, contrary to popular belief, carats measure the mass of the stone rather than its size. Carats are abbreviated "ct." Carats were originally based on the weight of a carob bean in ancient Greece. Grams, a unit in the metric system, also measure mass and are abbreviated "g." In 1907, the carat was officially defined as 200 mg, or 0.2 g.
